Special Recognition
Special recognition goes to riders Daniel Sherburne and Scott Simerson. Daniel riding his Gold Wing, and Scott on his VFR stopped to render assistance to rider Brian Zaleski (fuel pump failure) at the furthest point away from the start (Sonora Pass). Daniel carries a full set of tools with him and they spent about 2 hours trying to get Brian's machine up and running, before finally declaring the pump dead and giving Brian a ride into Walker to get a tow. Then again in McKittrick, when Andrew Kenefick struck a dog and broke his water pump, Daniel and Scott remained to insure a tow was secured. This prevented both riders from completing the last required stop and making it back to Lancaster in 24 hours. They took a bail out and arrived in 23 hours 11minuts, still completing over 1000 miles. SBA salutes these two riders on their selflessness out on the roadway and consideration for their fellow motorcyclists.
DNF Report
Brian Zalesky, Honda ST1100, fuel pump failure on CA-108 (Sonora Pass) near the US-395 junction. After attempting roadside repair, Brian was given a ride into Walker where he arranged a tow and overnight stay in Bishop. The next morning, the bike miraculously started and ran fine, and Brian was able to ride it home to Surprise AZ. That indeed is a surprise!
Andrew Kennefick, Suzuki GSXR-750 had an encounter with a dog in McKittrick, just prior to stop #8. Andrew managed to stay on the machine, but the fairing and water pump sustained heavy damage. He arranged for a tow back to Lancaster and was able to join us for brunch and trailer the bike back home to San Diego.
Jose "Zorrito" Paez on his Yamaha 650 Seca Turbo was unable to get gas in Coalinga (credit card issues). He continued to Taft and then Santa Paula but upon realizing the clock was against him, decided to take the short route back home to Los Angeles. He was confirmed safe and sound at home Sunday morning.
