Route chart format? - 2006/06/27 13:04 Does anyone know the size/format of the route chart? I am wondering if it will fit in a tankbag's top map pocket. Or is it a roll chart?

Re:Route chart format? - 2006/06/27 15:14 From what I can understand they will have the route downloadable here shortly. Probably gps map data that will not help your size/format question. The printed one that you get at check is surely tank bag size. We will soon see.

And all this did not help one bit...

Re:Route chart format? - 2006/06/27 16:52 We will post a Streets and Trips format file for sure. Probably Delorme as well. We have GPS coordinates/waypoints for all mandatory gas stops which we can post as well. The route chart itself is being worked up now. Our goal is to have it fit in a standard tankbag map pocket. We're thinking spiral bound is the best way to go, but we haven't decided 100% on that yet, we're gonna try a couple things and see what works best. I've run 4 Saddlesores from a staple bound route book that didn't quite fit in my tank bag so I had to fold it over... I'm sure whatever we chose won't be optimal for everyone, but we'll try hard.

If there are additional formats that you would like to see, just let us know and we'll do our best to make that available.

Re:Route chart format? - 2006/06/30 02:14 Whatever the format it needs to be dead simple. The emphasis should be on the riding. While I enjoy the use of GPS it can distracting. If the route is so convoluted as to require GPS it then, I think, changes this event from what I perceive as an introductory one for sportbike riders to something more complex, with a different target audience.

While this may sound like a Luddite talking, that's not the case. I'm a gadget freak, but like like to keep the technology in check. The essence of motorcycles is the man/machine (or woman) relationship. For me, anything that gets between the two, takes from the experience.

I vote for a hard copy tank bag map.

Re:Route chart format? - 2006/06/30 04:08 I'm with you 100% on this Reg. I also find GPS distracting while navigating on the bike. Maybe that's because I have an older Garmin eMAP w/o navigation capabilities, but I think for ease of use a hardcopy route chart that is clear and readable while on the bike can't be beat. That is our emphasis. The rest (downloadable streets & trips, gps waypoints, etc.) are just extras.

I can also assure you the route itself is dead simple to navigate. I think there are only 2 places where a missed turn is likely, and in both cases, even if you miss a turn you will end up in the right place anyway. In previous Saddlesore's I've ridden, the thing that presented the biggest challenge to me is when the route chart says one thing, and the road signage says another. For instance the route will say right turn on Hwy 44, but the signage on the road makes no reference to "44", and just has a street name, leaving the rider to guess based on mileage what the right action is. Our pre-run was all about matching the route chart instructions to the actual signs/names/turns on the route.

We should have the Streets & Trips file posted today, the route chart is coming along...
